The Ibo people don't really accept the white people at first. This results in the white people destroying a village of the Ibo. The white people do not understand why the white people are there. The white people then try to convert the Ibo to Christianity and the Ibo do not understand the concept of the Trinity. After a little bit some of the natives begin to understand and some of them start to convert to Christianity. The white men do not respect the natives at all. They consider them not as humans but as animals or savages. They treat them like animals and try to control them. They do not think that the Ibo customs and culture is valid or realistic and ignore it completely and do not consider how they do things. They do things to the Ibo or force the Ibo to do things that is opposite their culture. This results in very poor treatment of the Ibo. They do not respect them and treat them as savages and try to tame them. The British veiw the Africans as the animals that roam the conitenint. They think of them as very low, intelligent, wild savages. The British think no higher of them than they do the lowest peasants.

Okonkwo
Okonkwo still does not treat his wives with respect. He still expects them to do the chores and take care of them. He still beats his wives. He thinks that his son is a failure because he cares about other people and doesn't understand why Ikemufuna. He thinks he is weak because he is a convert to christianity. He shows this by choking Nwoye. He disrespects him. He expects him to be manly and be a wreslter.
This one-sidedness creates many problems. He thinks he is a failure because he was exiled and is pouting. He thinks he has it terrible and his life is awful when really, he has gotten a nice break. He got a bag of yam seeds, a lot to build on and supplies. He doesn't understand what other people are going through. He thinks that because he was exiled he is a failure. This characteristic also causes other problems. Okonkwo becomes depressed. He is lazy and takes out his frustration on other people. He chokes his son and is always grumpy and in a sour mood. He cares only for himself and thinks that the world revovles around him. He is selfish and spoiled.
